Pain Killers
Dr,
I have a quick question. Recently I injured a thumb tendon (or both of them, not completely sure), and was diagnosed with DeQuervain's tenosynovitis. I'm in a cast so to speak that restricts movement of my thumb.
For 2 weeks at the beginning I: iced/heated affected area daily, took 800mgX3 ED of ibuprofen, and laid of weight lifting. After 2 weeks (last Tuesday) it still was not feeling better, so I was given a cortisone injection to reduce the swelling. About two days after that my thumb has been throbbing on and off, along with a little tingly feeling. I've been quite uncomfortable with pain, and have not been getting a good nights sleep as a result of it. I went to an urgent care facility yesterday, and all the doctor did was prescibe me relafen 1500mg ED for a month. When I asked about what to do with the pain that was keeping me up and that was bothering me the whole day, she rolled her eyes at me, and stated "i'm not prescribing you narcotics," and "take benadryl (diphenhydramine) to go to sleep."
I'm pretty frustrated at this point, as no doctor seems to be listening to my pain concerns. Is there a huge hesitation to prescribing temporary (less than 1 week) narcotic pain killers just so a person can go without pain? It's really driving me nuts, and I know pain (I walked/played sports with 6 months of pain with a misdiagnosed slipped capital femoral epiphysis incident as an adolescent).
Is there a certain way of going about requesting pain medication? All i'm given is the "take ibuprofen/NSAIDs" for pain, which hasn't helped for the past 3 weeks. I'm frustrated, and need my sleep/sanity for classes which just started up yesterday, because this is an uncomfortable pain. What's a guy to do?
Thanks as always Dr. H.
