First you need to make sure that you're in shape and have the "look" that is desirable in this industry (but depends on what you want to model for, whether harder or softer, etc.). Competing is a good way to get exposure (and definitely gets you seen by the photographers, magazines, and supplement company owners); most of the successful fitness models in the US competed and did well and that was that. Otherwise, start by building a portfolio, join up on a few sites (i.e. onemodelplace), go to tradeshows/events and get seen, or make contacts within companies, and enter modeling competitions run by companies/magazines, etc. (you can find these on many sites, BB.com for example in the Company Promotions section). You could always approach companies with a proposal, but make sure that you know what kind of models that they use and that your look is what would work for them (remember that it's all about selling product).
