Default Front Squat vs. Regular Squat

I know there are differences but can anyone help indentify what specific differences exist between these two lifts?

What main muscle's does each lift focus on?

Which is "better"-might not be able to answer this though

What do most people prefer?

I dont do front squats. I think they focus primarily on your quads, but I typically do hack squats for that. Back squats give you the most bang for your buck, but if you are a bodybuilder, perhaps front squats should still be part of your regime. I dont have to worry about that.

Front Squats = better isolation of the quadriceps
Back Squats = Mainly quads, however hams and glutes do come in to play, esp. below parallel

Don't negate the front squat, I see people try to squat all the time, but never front squat. Why? Because it is harder to have bad form with the front squat.

The front squat will also help out by spinal load and flexion, and carry over to other lifts.

Mucho benegits with the front squat.

Good to know... I dont mind isolating the quad every once and a while so maybe i will get this back in my routine!

Yea I used to do these and they actually improved my Back Squat #'s... anyone else have this effect?

Can't beat regular SQs. But I will rotate front SQ in every so often-not replace reqular but as a supplemental exercise for DL. If you are a conventional DLer I would suggest throwing them in to aid off the floor.

Dana mentioned about hack squats once.. but he was referring to the free weight one. Any of you guys do the traditional barbell hack squats?

And how do you do yours?

Never done free weight hack squats. It might just be slipping my mind, but right now Im not sure exactly how that would work. I just hit up the machine for it. We also have this badass machine from back in Arnold's day that you lay down in and put your feet up at a 90 degree angle. Weight comes straiught down. Not sure what they call it but it works awesome, but I think Im the only one that uses it
