Don't worry about the mile time you can still kick our asses and in the end isn't that all that really matters?
I don't know but something that does help with improving speed is alternating pace on a mile. Lets say 4 laps, Spring a lap, jog a lap, spring a lap, jog a lap. Don't worry about time but conditioning. After a month of doing this you should be able to slice at least a minute off of your mile time. A lot of running is about pacing and breathing right. A big reason sports like football or wrestling incorporate running is not because a linebacker or wrestler will ever have to run 5 miles in their sport but because they have to control their body rhythm and breathing. Your mind stops you bro not you. Lactic acid? It's causes largely by fear neurons. Your body gets tired you feel tired your body sends some help. Don't kill yourself running harder and harder but run right make your mind own your body. I sound like Mr Miyagi Yikes!
