Question Diet pop: Am I over-reacting?

My friend is a trainer. She works out consistently and has a well-planned diet. However, she seems to have an addiction to Diet Pepsi that makes me cringe.

She claims "zero calories, zero guilt" just as the marketing would leave you to believe. I try to tell her that it's a bad idea to be drinking diet pop on a regular but don't really have anything to back up my arguement.

To be honest, I just want to be right and win the arguement. Anyone have any ideas to help me outwit this little brat?

well, generally there are a lot more chemicals in diet pop, they are masking agents, you need certain things to create flavor and sweetness, look at other things that are masked or taken out of their original environment, like cheeses, look at fat free cheese, there is a different texture because they use starch and yeast in it, and it even has an asterisk stating that its not a regular product in cheese. When I get my glucometer I am going to test out the insulin effects diet pop has, as well as diet energy drinks, maybe we can/could get a test group with this, as some are more sensitive than others...

The first Q&A talks about carbonated beverages. Not sure how reliable the info is, but there are a couple interesting points.

Not sure if it does but if the product contains 'aspartame' google that, some scary stuff on it, don't necessarily believe it myself by if you are just trying to win the arguement, theres plenty on that stuff.

also, carbonated beverages leech calcium from your bones and kidneys too I beleive.

Hmmmm... I had been under the impression that it was the phosphorus/phosphates found in cola-type drinks, and not ALL carbonated beverages? At least I HOPE this is the case because I have given up almost all diet drinks, and am clutching to my one last joy - carbonated water.

Oooh, I LIKE that one!!! ...that gives me a good start for some searches

We've went round and round with aspartame and problem is, we BOTH think it's bogus so I can't use that to win the arguement.

there should be some decent info on long term effects of aspartame....

the acid in the soda eats away at your tooth enamel, so she'll look real perdy in the future....

the aspartame will trick her body into feeling a sugar rush when its not really there which can throw things off if she is consuming sugar products...

the cortisol spike is still there....

Eh it might be the phosphorous, I just read carbonated beverages do this a while back, I never fully looked into it because I drink soda rarely.

Actually I read an article in Muscular Development linking regular (not occasional) diet soda drinking to metablolic syndrome. I have the magazine here but man that would be a lot of transcribing.
