Fructose (fruit sugar) has a preference for refilling LIVER glycogen stores rather than muscle stores.
I honestly am going out on a limb here to suggest that those that swear by it do so purely for the taste of the apple sauce in particular.
There is a high level of malic acid present which may lead to a greater propensity for workout energy (unsure and untested, but my sole hypothesis to rationale for their use).
