Cows on Ecstacy
My friend commisioned me to find a way to ensure his favorite bovine would see less long term detrimental effects to its brain. While normally I dont use my powers for evil, I felt bad for this particular animal due its lack of green grazing pasture land. So off to wikipedia I went..
"The primary physiological effect of MDMA is believed to be the stimulation of secretion, as well as inhibition of re-uptake, of large amounts of serotonin, as well as dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain."
Obviously my friend wants his cow to be as stoned as possible to ensure its bragging rights to the other local barnyard animals. Thus I broke down serotonin to its most basic level, 5-HT.
"5-Hydroxytryptophan or 5-HTP is a naturally-occurring amino acid, a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin and an intermediate in tryptophan metabolism."
Thus taking 5-HTP is a great way to load up serotonin levels before the actual dosing of the MDMA for the next farmhouse rave.
But then I thought, god, that poor cow is going to have the worst hangover ever and could possibly become depressed on a long term basis. So back to wikipedia again...
"Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a class of antidepressants used in the treatment of depression, anxiety disorders and some personality disorders. Studies have also found that SSRIs, as a side effect of their action, may cause in many people either a delay of sexual climax or anorgasmia, so they can be used to develop drugs specifically targeted to treat premature ejaculation.
SSRIs increase the extracellular level of the neurotransmitter serotonin by inhibiting its reuptake into the presynaptic cell, increasing the level of serotonin available to bind to the postsynaptic receptor. They have varying degrees of selectivity for the other monoamine transporters, having little binding affinity for the noradrenaline and dopamine transporters."
However, since my friend did not have a perscription for Zoloft or Prozac for 'Bessy' I opted to find the natural herb that has a similar (though dirty and less effective) method of doing the same thing.
"An early meta-study indicated that extracts of Hypericum may be more efficacious than placebo for the treatment of mild to moderately severe depressive disorders. This study, which covered the results from 23 smaller, earlier studies, is perhaps the most often cited by manufacturers and other supporters of St. John's wort. This study was later updated to include further studies, for a total of 27, to form a Cochrane Review. The updated review found that Hypericum preparations were significantly superior to placebo (rate ratio 2.47; 95% confidence interval 1.69 to 3.61) and similarly effective as standard antidepressants (single preparations 1.01; 0.87 to 1.16, combinations 1.52; 0.78 to 2.94). Another meta-analysis, with stricter inclusion criteria, found that Hypericum was more efficacious than placebo; and as efficacious as tricyclic antidepressants, with fewer adverse drug reactions. This meta-analysis showed that the response rate for St. John’s wort was significantly greater than that for placebo (73.2 versus 37.9%, respectively, relative risk 1.48 and 95% CI 1.03–1.92) and similar to that observed with tricyclic antidepressants (64 versus 66.4% for St. John’s wort and tricyclic antidepressants, respectively, relative risk 1.11 and 95% CI 0.92–1.29). Other, more recent trials have also shown greater efficacy than placebo, and comparable efficacy to standard antidepressants with a superior adverse effect profile. Additionally, a 2006 study involving 150 patients with minor depressive symptoms or dysthymia found that St. John's Wort has a clinically significant effect in patients with minor depression, but not those suffering from dysthymia. It was concluded that St. John's Wort can be effective in the treatment of people with minor depression with a Hamilton Depression Scale for Depression (HAM-D) score of up to 17."
Bingo! A way for my new favorite glowstick wielding farm animal to get maximize the effects of illicit drugs and also come back down from them with minimal effects.
I also suggested the use of SAMe afterwards due to the oral route these products take, not to mention the additional benefit of liver detoxification. It cant hurt right?
