Either way - I would go with the stim free version, just because it gives you more flexibility. They actually add a little focusing complex anyways (which I didn't know about until just a few days ago - how's that for applied knowledge) - and if you need the extra kick, caffeine pills are dirt cheap.

I would assume to alter the effects caused by R-ALA, you would want to consume some moderate GI carbs with this and some protein, but am not sure what type of effects this will have (if any) and how big/small the meal should be....

Honestly, I'm really not sure that protein or a small meal would have any real effects on absorbtion. Where the difference comes in is speed of delivery - it is quicker to move things through on an empty stomach, and you tend to get a more 'concentrated' dose at once. If you read a lot of NO containing products, they will often say consume on an empty stomach; it's because that's where the effect is maximized the quickest - but it is still effective with a meal.
Since R-ALA is a mimicker, yes - I would consume some form of carbohydrates with it. With my experiences, with as little as 20g of carbs I was ok, although I usually did 30-40g. For what it is worth, I ran the original version of Ragnorok - and really didn't experience those side effects (I rather liked it, although I nailed them for the milling and caffeine
