Sprinting is fine, when one says 'cardio' they usually mean 30min - hour on a treadmill, with speeds ranging from walking / jogging. I am not for people doing 'cardio' where they sit on a treadmill for their entire gym session. Sprinting uses type II muscle fibers, as does weight training, its when you do endurance type activities that you activate those smaller, weaker, less mitochondrial filled type I muscle fibers.

If running '5 miles without flinching' is your goal, then you would need to keep aerobic training in your protocol. Each person has their own goals, and if running that many miles is yours, keep cardio in your protocol. However, if someone is looking to change their body composition, you will find that omitting cardio from their regimen will yield better results.

And im not trying to bash you, but I think this is terrible advice. If a client of mine asked me for a training protocol and I told them ' just do what you feel works best for your body and it'll all workout in the end' I wouldn't have a job for very long

For the best exercise prescription, one must be knowledgable in the best ways to give his or her clients the best results.

Yeh I used to be a PT and I hear what you're saying. I never stated any goals aside from wanting to get my strength & size back which makes what you say spot on. When I played college football (as a WB/HB at 176lbs) though even the linemen were made to run but it was always in short bursts or against resistance (gauntlet, speed plow, etc.). However, from what I know and people I've trained the two are not exclusive. Case point and example, Barry Bonds (NO denying he is JACKED) included long distance running in his regime before all the injuries mounted up. So did Emmitt Smith even Warren Sapp.

My goal incidentally is to gain mass and strength without losing aerobic stamina. I gain pretty easily actually despite being a shiver over 150 at the moment. I think running frequently and intense kickboxing training have sucked me thin.

Best,
Ali
