As long as its on an empty stomach you should be fine, but I wouldn't take it with a large amount of protein though just in case. For endurance purposes you want to take it around half an hour before you work out, and for use as a sleep aid about half an hour before you go to bed. For those two purposes about 2g to 3g works well for most people. For anything else it doesn't really matter when you take it as it will build up slowly in your muscles, heart, liver, kidneys, and brain.
Anything past around 4g to 5g at once and the rest won't be absorbed. Additionally too much at once will cause stomach upset for some people because of its ability to hold water causing it to act as a laxative. Most of the studies showed little to nothing happening below around 4g/day, and no additional benifits past around 10g/day, so you'll want to aim somewhere in between that range.
