Alright one more quick one i can think of......Had a psych patient one time somehow get free from his leather restraints. Now before i finish the story, most e.r.'s are completly locked down and you need your badge to gain access to areas. Well this guy broke free and proceeded to sprint approx 20 yards towards the exit at full speed. Now i was charting at a counter and all i heard comming up behind me was bare feet running on the floor..... Just as i look up to see what it was, this guy ran into this huge reinforced door at full speed expecting it to open as he was going through it. Well, lets just say he was wrong and the door won........it literally sounded like a car hitting a tree. As he hit the door with his face, 4 of his front teeth went flying and he then proceeded recoil off the door to bounce off the floor a few more times like on a trampoline. Seriously i thought the guy was dead at first because he really hit the door that hard lol, but he lived to fight another day. The end result was he was out cold and split his head open from his forehead to his chin....The funny part about this was my buddy was chasing him , however he knew the dumba$$ would run into the door so he stopped to admire the show lol

I just thought of another story......i don't know if any of you have ever watched trauma life in the E.R. before, but this story originated from where i worked in tampa. These two guys were playing cards and very drunk......when apparently one of them cheated and all hell broke loose. I guess these two guys were brother and both were known to have bad tempers. So to make a long story short, one of the brothers had a large bowie knife on him and stabbed his brother right above his left orbit(eye).

Now the amazing thing about this story was he came into the E.R. completely alert and orientated(but drunk) with absolutely no focal neurological deficit from his apparent injury. Now this knife was sticking out of his head and embedded all the way to the hilt. I guess you can imagine the looks this guy got when they brought him in. Now we were a level 2 trauma center, however they wanted 2 neurosurgical teams present for this surgery, so he had to be transfered to the level 1 trauma center in tampa which is where trauma life in the E.R. picks up the story.

This story was truly amazing because the only injury that resulted after the surgery was a small amount of left ocular movement impairment. That guy was truly one lucky b@stard!!

Here's another that's pretty funny. This one's for you jomi you butt pirate haha. I had a patient come in and complain of "rectal pain." Now i asked the usual questions not really elaborating on a possible foreign body. Well, eventually the guy told me that he was out gardening in his garden......naked......yes he made it clear he was naked lol.....and fell over landing his rectum perfectly on a cucumber. At first I just didn't even know what to say lol. I had to ask, so I said "Why were you gardening naked?" He proceeds to tell me "I don't want any tan lines!" bwwaaahhhhaaaaahhaaa! I couldn't keep a straight face and had to leave the room after that one. I'm telling you it never ceases to amaze me what people will say sometimes. That's why i love my job haha. So sure enough the guy had a cucumber all the way retracted in his colon.....and yes this did require surgical intervention for removal. To be honest I don't even want to know the real story because this was a keeper hahahahaha!

Yepper. Never witnessed anything like it, and I probably won't ever again. What a trauma case that was!!

I've come to the point now that i honestly don't even think about it anymore. At first I would think how stupid i was putting myself at risk to all these horrible diseases with one simple error.....especially in the E.R. However, overtime you really become so intune with your job that the thought never even passes you mind. I've come to realize that my true calling was medicine and I'm good at what I do. I'm the type of person that gets bored very easy, so the E.R. is a perfect fit for me.....you never know what's going to happen
