Oddly enough Sam's Club has an inexpensive Smith Machine, and I would think if you were going to forgo a real gym that would be one of the 1st things you'd want to start with. I believe you can duck some shipping if you just have them send it to a local store for pick up. They have some interesting looking Smith Machines with other accessories as well. I don't know what the quality would be like, but there are always your fitness supply stores, that sell equipment meant for gyms. Ideally you'd go to the gym, find something you like, get the name, and then look up their dealers for that piece of equipment.

All the All-In-One machines I have ever had, at any price, had one issue or another. Free weights are certainly best, but they are of course expensive to ship. Unless you live off the beaten path you might want to try to find a local vendor. I am planning on building a full gym one of these days myself, but I am already doing 10x reps at max settings on most the machines at the 24-Hour Fitness I usually work out at. I'd be pissed if I had bought a bunch of machines and then "grew out of them", so you want to keep growth in mind as well. There are a few machines that don't suck I guess, but if you don't have room or the budget to get one of everything you need (one machine per exercise) then you certainly want to try out an All-in-One set before you buy one. I have been disappointed with everyone I have owned, especially so after spending two days assembling them :(

I like the idea above. I would get plenty of plate weights to keep you rolling. The smith machine is a great idea, just make sure its balanced and won't fall out of balance easy as that is a fun time trying to squeeze out of a load locked bar. I would get 2-3 pairs of adjustable db's so you can setup a few db;s before your workout and not have to fiddle with much during the workout. I would go with some simple iron for the db's and not the bowflex selectorized stuff. A cable tower may be nice if you can find one that attaches to the smith that may be good, but be careful with the all-in-one smith machines as some tend to be built like pure crap and for the young teen population. I don't think they have the smith machines with locked in benches, but be sure to get a bench that you can move around and is adjustable.

I completely agree with a home gym, but would rather buy a power rack and free weights than a bowflex. I guess thats just me though.

Yes, Sams club, costco, etc.....those warehouse retailers have real inexpensive bench sets, squat racks, etc. Otherwise, check craigslist or ebay, or make your own with cement of concrete

lol, no bowflex!!

Just get adjustable dumbels and barbell, squat rack, and bench.

You can even make the squat rack.

don't know if this has been mentioned, but a lot of times (especially a few weeks after christmas / new years) in the paper the ads oftentimes list a lot of workout equipment for cheap. You have all these people going 'im going to but this new bowflex or whatever workout bench and get buff!' 2 weeks go by and they don't look like arnold yet so they just sell it for cheap.

me too... that's what i've got actually.....i can do everything i need to on it. I also have a crappy bench with the leg ext/curl attachment with the preacher pad. Not having all the bells and whistles that a full blown gym offers kind of forces you to do compound moves. which is what we should be doing anyway, right???
