How does it work? I don't recall off hand what needs to be reactivated in cancer cells to induce apoptosis...

OK, lactic acidosis is the common state of metabolism in cancer cells. Cancer cells, lacking the ability to produce energy from within their own cellular machinery (mitochondria), revert to producing sugar for cell energy, which produces lactic acid as a by-product. The lactic acid dumps outside the cell, repelling anti-cancer agents and making the cancer cell immortal. Dammit, these tumor cells won’t die off like normal cells.

So the researchers found that dichloroacetate (DCA) revives the energy-producing compartments (mitochondria) within cancer cells, eventually resulting in cancer cell death (what researchers called apoptosis). DCA did no harm to surrounding healthy cells, so it might be non-toxic.

Yeah im not too well versed all about cancer stuff, but I did find it interesting and hopefully if it does what it is meant to do, we see this stuff being mass made and helping a lot of people.

Thanks for the explaination. Quite helpful. If it does what you say it does then this would be a big problem for Social Security and other things. I hope it does work because a couple people in my family have cancer.

Controversial drug DCA to get first human trials

A potential anti-cancer treatment that attracted massive public interest earlier this year is to be tested on 50 people with brain tumours.

The drug, dichloroacetate (DCA), disables the energy-producing mechanism in cancerous cells, although concerns remain over toxicity and side effects such as nerve damage.

Promising results from animal studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada (New Scientist, 20 January, p 13) led to attempts by desperate cancer patients to buy DCA - a common lab chemical - online. The US Food and Drug Administration later halted sales of the unapproved drug.

The Canadian researchers, meanwhile, sought permission from Health Canada to carry out an authorised trial - and now they have it. "We've obtained human ethics approval as well, and we plan to start immediately," says lead researcher Evangelos Michelakis. The team has so far raised $800,000 in public donations to fund the trial.
